About Me

First of all, this is who I have been.  I have been that awkward boy raised by a good family in a small town.  I have been an only child til age seven when my sister was born followed by a brother three years later and then another brother twelve years later (believe it!).  I have three brothers who died as infants that I never knew. I have been a teacher’s pet and a teacher’s worst nightmare.  I have been that student that didn’t quite live up to his potential as a student; the one whose future and potential was seen by everyone except himself.  I have been that teenager with poor to mediocre self image leading to many bad decisions for the sake of fitting in, including drugs, alcohol, and sex.  I have been that good kid that makes bad choices.  I have been the rebellious adolescent who stole from his dad’s place of business and who chose the conditional approval and laughter of friends over the unconditional acceptance and love of family.  I have been both the perpetrator and victim of peer pressure.  I have been guilty as a youth and as an adult of knowing the right thing to do but not doing it simply because the wrong thing felt better.  I have been chased out of a town (two, actually) with guns pointed at me and shots fired for doing the wrong things in the wrong place at the wrong time.  I have had a life changing experience at a small Assembly of God church in Coolidge, Arizona.  I am proud to say that I have been an airman in the United States Air Force.  I have been a Bible College student and a licensed minister with the Assembly of God and Pentecostal Church of God organizations.  I have been a youth pastor for twenty years (1987 to 2007) but have worked with youth for closer to thirty years.  To my displeasure, I have officiated funerals for teenagers.  But it has been my pleasure to officiate the weddings of young adults who have grown up under my care.  I have been there when their chidren were born and I have been there when their marriages struggled and ended in divorce.  To my joy, I have witnessed the teens whom I have taught, teach their own children the very biblical principles and life lessons they leIMG_20140826_151207arned from me.  I have led or participated in ministry/mission trips to the Central Valley of California, Reynosa, Mexico, and on the island of Trinidad.  I have been an associate pastor and worship pastor.  And, for what its worth, I have been married, divorced, and married again.

Now… this is who I am.  I am Joseph Anthony Martinez.  I used to be called Joey…you can call me Joe (or Mr. Martinez if you are one of my students).  I am a man who has learned from many mistakes in life.  I am over fifty years old and I am still discovering my strengths and weaknesses.  I have re-invented myself more than once and I am doing so, now.  My passion is imparting life lessons to young people, especially middle school students.  I am a College and Career Advisor and a Life Skills teacher at Villago Middle School in Casa Grande, Arizona.  There are nearly nine hundred students at Villago and every day at work, I have the privilege of interacting with and impacting kids.  I love my job. I am not afraid to hug a student for fear of losing my job because I know how valuable and badly needed hugs are in this generation.  I am fully aware of the fact that I am where I am by the grace of Almighty God.  It is because of Him and in spite of myself that I have achieved or obtained anything valuable in this life.  That brings me to this.  I am a man deeply loved and completely supported by an exquisite woman named Tina.  She is my best friend, soul mate and wife. I am a dad to five children and a grand-dad to eight.  I love them all and I am expressly aware of the fact that they love me.  I love my life, the God who created it, and the people He has placed within it.  Although, for comparatively brief moments throughout my life, I have had regrets, I no longer do because I know that every good and bad thing I have ever encountered on this side of heaven is still making me.  Both, as a human being and as a follower of Jesus Christ, I am a work in progress.

Welcome to Mental Morsels…  May the writings and posts contained in these pages be uplifting, inspirational, and Food For Thought.

…Peace and Blessings…

Inspiring, to say the least, Joe! Before I leave the U.S., you told me that it is ok to make mistakes as long as we move….as God only can steer the moving. You have no idea how much that affected and comforted me. Thank you, deeply!
